Hello 2.0!

Mauria mentioned Sept. 24th for our first session… We should discuss soon – I'm hoping to get a third player before then. In the meantime, I'd like to share two blog posts:

They're both by Steven Lumpkin, head designer of Rollercoaster Tycoon. Yeah, weird. What does RCT have to do with DnD/ttRPGs? Well, he writes regularly about tabletop rpgs and plays/GMs a fair number of them on twitch. If you have time, please read what you can – especially the referee post. The posts combined highlight what is truly magical about OSRs, and does a great job of encapsulating principles I use in gameplay. You, as both player and character, will face these principles as you figure out how to get what you want from the world of Kem and all that lies within.

A final note: There are videos of him fleshing out these ideas - which puts you in the mind of the DM and player alike – but I'll let you find those on your own if your interest so beguiles you.

Thanks for joining my Obsidian Portal account. I'm hoping to manage most of our game through here, and use facebook as a supplement for communication.

To get started, you can put yourself in your character's position. Everything you do in-game will be through the eyes/experiences of this being. Good places to start are your appearance and  background. It helps to pick a race and class. Are you an Elven wizard? A Dwarven warrior? A human farmer-turned-adventurer who has scouting/hunting (ranger) skills? What are your strengths? Your weaknesses, your fears? Describe your upbringing, your ideals, your outlook on life. This is to help you get into the mindset of your character – you'll be jumping into their skin so I expect some consistency with who you are presenting to the in-game world.

I'll post some links below if you need some more direction - but always ask if you're uncertain or have any questions.

My main restrictions are:

  1. Balance. Your characters will grow more powerful over time. Start small, and we can fill in the gaps and build things up together.
  2. No evil characters. On the alignment scale, let's keep characters neutral – good. You can play a character from a stereotypically evil race – but balance it out. A common solution to this is your character "isn't like the others" and has faced prejudice her whole life that has dramatically shaped who she is.
  3. No overpowered characters. If you want to play a dragon, you'll have to have a reeeeally good hook OR something that balances you out with the rest of your party (i.e. you're an adolescent ice dragon, but your wings have been clipped and your freeze breath doesn't kick in for another 40 years).

That said, I will always give you a chance to make your case. If you can convince me (and possibly the other players) that your idea is workable, I will absolutely let it fly, with the condition that I get to impose limits as needed. 


These are just a starting point. If you see something you like, mull it over for a bit and if you still have hang ups let me know.
